Aug 10-on-10 | Nelson-Atkins Museum | Kansas City Family Photography

It’s pushing into the middle of August. Summer is fading. SCHOOL STARS TODAY! What?!

I had so many big ideas. So many plans. All these wonderful adventures and fun we’d have this summer. Yep, that didn’t happen. It never does. We mostly just survived with some fun mixed in. There were a few big things on my list that felt like non-negotiables, though. A few things we were going to squeeze into summer no matter what.

Once of these things was to visit the lawn of the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum in Kansas City. I’ve been down there a few times for sessions and exploration, but I’d never taken the kids. Art museum and kids just sounds like a terrible idea mostly. At least my crazy monkeys. The LAWN of the museum, though, is a little more low key. Outside and park-like, you can use your outside voice and your running feet and it’s OK.

The giant shuttlecocks are iconic KC and the kids thought they were hilarious, but the main reason I brought them here was for the glass maze.  I’ll be honest, I’ve dreamed of the amazing images that could be created in that thing and we made those dreams come true. To top it off, the kids had a blast in it and didn’t want to leave so, win-win.

It was s super hot morning {duh, August in KC} so it was a very quick trip; the grumpies came out fast. There are so many more nooks I’d love to explore so we’ll have to make another trip. Maybe in the fall this time instead…
